While the tense conclusion to the English Premier league finally separated the two Manchester sides, the city will this time be united as it celebrates the 10th staging of the Bupa Great Manchester Run on Sunday (May 20). With 40,000 runners expected to take part, the race looks set to further establish itself as one of the leading mass participation events in the world. In the lead-up to this year's event, excitement has intensified with confirmation of both Haile Gebreselassie and Patrick Makau's participation, setting up an interesting duel between past and present world record holders.

With words of encouragement from Olympic silver medallist Kriss Akabusi ringing in their ears, more than 6,000 runners successfully completed the RunLiverpool half marathon in March. After showing a marked increase in popularity, organisers have opened entries for the 2013 event and have set a limit of 7,500. In addition to confirming the quota, there was also news of a modified start and finish point at Pier Head, with the current spot of King's Parade - deemed too small to accommodate the upsurge in numbers.

With a round figure of 100 runners, perfect, sunny conditions and eager volunteers, there was something unmistakably fitting about Preston's opening parkrun on Saturday (May 12). A much sought after and eagerly anticipated event, the 100 participants set off from the East Lancs Viaduct and covered three anti-clockwise laps, taking in both Avenham and Miller parks. Forest of Dean AC's Peter Woodward was the first home in 17:42, with Andrew Vause second (17:57) and Jamie Cook third (18:25). Local runner Charlotte Rawcliffe (23:29) was fastest woman.

The historic Wirral village of Port Sunlight staged a successful inaugural 10k last Sunday (May 13) with the big field of runners and enthusiastic spectators enjoying good weather. 850 had entered the race from across the UK and there was international interest with one runner jetting in from South Africa.

With a revamped course providing all of the 3620 finishers a fitting finale at Town Hall Square, competitors and organisers alike have hailed Sunday's (May 13) Cheshire Oaks Chester half marathon a success. Rob Baker took this year's men's title with a strong time of 1:09:25 while Emma Parry was fastest woman.

Under the direction of the popular Jane Tomlinson's Run For All Series, Leeds half marathon attracted its highest turnout in its 26 year history with over 4,500 runners completing yesterday's (Sunday, May 13) race. With a strong breeze accompanying runners from the outset, Wharfedale Harriers' Owen Beilby secured first place (1:13:54) ahead of Bingley Harriers' Stephen Bailey (1:14:04). Frederick Slemlick rounded off the top three positions with a time of 1:15:16.

Ahead of the Bupa Great Manchester Run, event organisers are offering runners the opportunity of a lunchtime 5k with James Cracknell. The Olympic gold medallist, who recently completed the Virgin London Marathon in under 3 hours, will be hosting the Bupa Flash Run in Salford.
Champions To Defend Titles At Loch Ness →

Salford's Tomas Abyu and Dumfries athlete Lisa Finlay have pledged to defend their respective titles at the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon on Sunday, September 30. Confirmation of both athletes participation will be viewed as a further boost for this year's event, which looks set to attract 9,000 runners.

Organisers of Sunday's Cheshire Oaks Chester half marathon are preparing for the largest turnout in the event's 31 year history with around 5,000 runners expected to take part. This year's race shows a marked increase in competitors, with the 2011 event recording just over 2,000 runners. Sunday's half marathon will the first on a new route and the prospect of a quick, flat course has clearly resulted in an upturn in numbers.
