In what has been one of the most enquired about and sought after locations for a parkrun event, this Saturday (May 12) will see hundreds of runners prepare for a regular 5k run at Avenham Park, Preston. Starting at the East Lancs Viaduct at the bottom of the park, the run will consist of 3 anti-clockwise laps and finishes at the Pavilion. The route takes in both Avenham and Miller Parks, running alongside the River Ribble.

While the red half of Merseyside was suffering the hangover of an FA cup final defeat, RunLiverpool boosted the city's sporting spirits as it celebrated its first ever Festival of Running on Sunday, May 6. The sun shone brightly over Sefton Park as athletes and fun runners joined together for a full race programme which included the Men Only 10K, Women's 10K, Women's 5K and the under 12's 1 mile fun run.

The first staging of the Marathon of the North has been heralded a success with more than 1000 runners taking part in Sunday's race. Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell joined event organiser Steve Cram in overseeing the Run Sunderland Festival, which included the Sunderland City 10k and the Junior Run. Paul Wilson of Hartlepool Burn Road Harriers inscribed his name in the history books by securing first place in a time of 2:43:31. The 36-year-old broke away at the 10k mark and finished almost three minutes ahead of Andrew Pearson (2:46:29). Chester le Street AC's Ian Bloomfield rounded off the podium positions, finishing in 2:51:25.

With 6,000 runners expected to turn out for next week's Leeds half marathon, the city's Up and Running branch is hosting a preparation day for all those taking part in the 13.1 mile race. The store event, which takes place the day before the race on Saturday, May 13, will be offering last minute pre-race tips and advice for recovery from running expert Mike Hendricks of Optimum Health from lunchtime until 6pm. This will be followed by yoga and stretch out sessions to ensure you are fully limbered up for the big day.

This Bank Holiday Monday (May 7) sees business as usual for the Deep RiverRock Belfast City marathon with over 20,000 runners expected on the streets of the city today. The 31st staging of the event looks set to be one of the most competitive with a number of international athletes vying for victory, and as colourful as usual with the huge relay turnout.

Last weekend saw a rain soaked Yorkshire Dales host the Three Peaks Fell Race in the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. But the inclement weather didn't dampen the spirits of the 750 runners who took part in the event. Among those runners was Scots pair, Joe Symonds and Sarah O'Neil, who took home the top prizes. Both runners were from the fittingly-titled Hunter's Bog Trotters.
