It is so tempting to let all that good work us runners have done over the summer go to waste by avoiding those rainy and windy weather conditions. Yes the cold conditions could lead to catching a cold and the icy roads and paths make injuries a greater risk, but with the right preparation and planning these conditions can be easily managed.
Below are some top tips to survive the cold winter months and keeping those legs running!
- Have a warm drink just prior to leaving the house. This will keep you warm well into your run as well as providing good hydration
- Layer up. Make sure you have a warm base layer that fits snugly. This keeps the warm body heat close to your body and keeps windy drafts out. Then layer up with a long sleeve top followed by a good quality wind and rain proof jacket. It is essential to have a wind and rain proof jacket to keep as much cold rain and wind from reaching the skin as possible as this cools the body temperature down quickly.
- Gloves and hats! Essential! The majority of heat lost from the body is through your head so make sure you keep this heat in and wear a good quality fleecy hat. Gloves are essential to keep the hands relaxed. Light-weight gloves are best and many nowadays have touch panels for controlling your ipod!
- Shoes and socks. Goretex shoes which are water resistant are ideal for keeping the cold and damp away from your feet. Socks need to be well fitted, as when lose fitting socks get wet, they can change shape and cause blisters to occur.
When you get back, get changed and have a warm shower or bath straight away. It is a good idea to have your towel and change of clothes ready for you when you get back, prepare these prior to leaving for your run. It is important to warm the body back up as soon as possible to avoid those nasty colds! Then you can treat yourself to a well-earned rest knowing that you have taken on the elements and won, don't let the winter lock you inside, some of those wintry, snowy mornings are the best!
