A Day In The Lakes, With A Difference

25 JUN2010

A runner in the Lake District

Most people would associate a day in the lakes as a relaxing time, taking in the breathtaking sights of the Lake District; but for 400 athletes, Sunday's 'A Day In The Lakes' triathlon couldn't be different. The event will see competitors battle it out in a gruelling 1/2 Ironman distance route, covering 70.3 miles in water, on two wheels and on foot.

The race was first held last year, with 330 athletes finishing the course on the day. Building on the success of 2009, the course will remain the same, with participants tackling a 1.2 mile swim in Ullswater, before completing a 56 mile cycle, which will include the Kirkstone Pass, a steep, sharp incline taking the cyclists to 1500 feet. The race will then end in a 13 mile run, which will again reach a peak of almost 1500 feet.

Organisers "TriHard' are warning athletes to expect a challenging course and are offering a free open water swim coach session for less experienced entrants, the day before the race. The race on Sunday should be under near perfect weather conditions, with a moderately warm temperature and bright cloudy skies forecast.
