This weekend's Bupa Great North Run will be a special year for this iconic event. Now the biggest half marathon event in the world, the 30th anniversary of the race marks a huge achievement for the north east. Michael Johnson will be taking a look at the world's love affair with the north east race in a special programme on the BBC tonight.
Michael talks to veterans, fun runners and fundraisers about why they love this race so much as well as hearing from one of the world's greatest long distance runners, Haile Gebrselassie, who will be taking part in the race for the first time this year. The programme will be shown on the BBC at 19:30 tonight, on the regional channel for the North East and Cumbria, however digital viewers from other parts of the country will also be able to tune in through their digital receivers.
Over 50,000 runners take part in the Great North Run each year, and to celebrate the 30th anniversary, NORTHERN RUNNING GUIDE are offering all runners in the race a chance to win some great new running gear if they can predict their time for the event. The closest male and female official times to their predicted time, will will a fantastic prize package from Mizuno.
