Summer Series In Nail-biting Final

17 SEP2010

The front runners in the Castleton Race. (Thomas Aspin)

The Northern Runner and Eskdale Valley Fell Race Summer Series came to an exciting finale on Saturday, the Castleton Show Run. Going into the final race of the series, there were three contenders for the men's title, however Mike Jeffries of North York Moors AC came through to win. Pippa Archer of Durham Fell Runners had already won the women's series before the start of the final race.

The series consisted of 11 races, of which each competitor's top six scores were counted towards an overall score. A special mention needs to go out to Giles Hawking of York Knavesmire Harriers, who completed all 11 races, finishing an overall third in the men's competition.

The culmination of the summer series leads the way for the start of the winter series, which will begin with the Viking Chase - Four Peaks Fell Race on September 26. This race is 7.8 miles with 1800 feet of ascent on scenic paths in the North York Moors. The race is in aid of the Cleveland Search and Rescue Team. Find out more about the series on the Eskdale Valley Fell Club website.
