New Marathon For Liverpool

30 SEP2010

Runners in Lancashire, across the north of England and indeed throughout the UK have a major new event to look forward to with the decision that Liverpool will stage its first marathon in 20 years in 2011. Race day is scheduled for Sunday, October 9.

Plans for the big event took a step forward last week with the decision to award the management of the marathon to London-based Limelight Sports. Limelight Sports is the company behind a number of high profile, mass participation sports events and grassroots development programmes such as Nike RunLondon, Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile, Swimathon and Sky Ride.

Organisers will be hoping to attract 10,000 participants for the inaugural Liverpool Marathon, building up to a 20,000 plus runner event that will have a similar impact to the London Marathon and the Great North Run. Although a route is yet to be confirmed, the World Heritage waterfront would be a key part of showcasing Liverpool, as would the city's historic cathedrals.
