New Lakeland Marathon In 2011

Organisers of the new off road marathon in the Lake District have been delighted by the response to the event which will be run for the first time on July 3, 2011. Close to 300 entries have already been received for the event that is being billed as the 'most picturesque marathon in the UK', and with a limit of just 1,000 the Lakeland Trails Marathon is sure to be a sell-out.

The new marathon operates at two levels, there is the Coniston Marathon Challenge which will start 3 hours before the Coniston Marathon Trail Race. Both Challenge and Race cover the full 42.2k, however the Challenge has a time limit of 8 hours so plenty of scope for the steadier runner.

The event also incorporates the Coniston Mini Marathon Trail Run (14km), an ideal taster for runners who fancy the full 42.2k but want to take a look at the course before a full assault in 2012. The Coniston Marathon Fun Trails are being organised for children under 12.

The Lakeland Trails Marathon is being organised by VO2 Max Events, the company behind the successful Lakeland Trails programme of races and event director Graham Patten told NORTHERN RUNNING GUIDE:

"We're building on our experience across our established events in creating what we believe will be one of the best marathons in the country. The Lakeland Trails Marathon has been over two years in the planning and involved detailed negotiations with the National Trust.

"Our route is a complete circuit of Coniston Water takes in Tarn Hows and Blea Water and although it's run at a relatively low level, there are still lots of panoramic views. There are some ups and downs along the 42.2k course it is by no means a 'tough' marathon and I anticipate that we will get a sub 2:30 winner in the Race.

Graham continued: "Two key features of the Lakeland Trails Marathon will be the quality of organisation - 100 plus marshals will ensure a high level of safety on the well-marked footpaths and the quality of entertainment - our events are noted for their live music and great atmosphere."
