Liverpool - Capital of Running 2011

Liverpool is set to be the unofficial UK capital of running in 2011. The centrepiece event of the year is the restored Liverpool marathon which is scheduled for Sunday, October 9, 2011. However a full programme of races will keep running in the forefront in the city over the 12 month period.

The first big date is Sunday, March 27 and the Liverpool Half Marathon and after a significant increase in entries for the 2010 event (up by over 35%) organisers are to impose a limit on this race at 6,000 entries. Closing date for entries will be Friday, March 4 2011 or before if the race limit is reached.

May is a big month with both the Women's 10k and the Tunnel 10k while the Big Heart 5k in August is always a colourful event.

NORTHERN RUNNING GUIDE will be providing weekly news updates on the big one - the Liverpool Marathon as we build up to Sunday, October 9. This is set to be a huge occasion as organiser Alan Rothwell and his team use their considerable experience and work to create one of the UK's top running events.

The year ends in festive style with the 5k Santa Dash - maybe 2011 will see Liverpool rest the title of the world's biggest Santa Dash from glitzy rivals Las Vegas? 7,000 Santas turned out to run for charity just a few weeks ago and organisers are hoping that with the Marathon factor, 2011 will be a record-breaker.

More good running news for the city comes with the expectation that the successful parkrun project will be coming to the city in early 2011. Sefton park has been earmarked as a venue and a Facebook page has been set up by local enthusiasts Angela Taylor, Russell Burnham, Shane Knott and Mike Roxburgh. The key to the success of this new weekly free 5k time trail is attracting volunteers to make sure the event goes smoothly. If you're interested in getting involved contact seftonparkrun@yahoo.co.uk and they'll let you know what's happening.

If you know of other running-related events and activities please add your comments to this story.
