After a successful year where parkrun grew from 22 to 51 locations in the UK, the London Marathon has announced it is extending its support for parkrun to 2011.
The London Marathon is keen to support grassroots sport around the whole of the UK, not just in London. "The London Marathon attracts runners from all over the UK and abroad, so we're keen to encourage running in all parts of the country", said London Marathon Race Director, Dave Bedford.
"In addition to increasing the number of free events in the UK next year, we are also keen to see parkrun address the opportunity of getting inactive people into sport. parkrun offers a fun and easy way to facilitate this."
"Our growth in 2010 is testament to the fantastic volunteers who organise these events around the country and to the support we get from our sponsors. In particular, London Marathon has taken an active and positive role in guiding our direction this year." said parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt.
"I am looking forward to another year of constructive engagement with the folks at London Marathon to extend our reach and continue the impact of parkrun in the UK".
