New Lancashire parkruns
21 JAN2011
Excitement is mounting in Bolton and Liverpool as new parkrun events are set to hit the Lancashire cities. Bolton will launch on Saturday, February 5 at Leverhulme Park, Long Lane where parkrunners are asked to meet at the athletics track for a 9.00am start. No firm date has been set for the launch of parkrun Liverpool although a hard-working group has been beavering away behind the scenes for some time.
For the uninitiated, parkrun is the free 5k weekly time trail that has grown to over 50 locations in the UK in just a few years. The Greater Manchester area is a parkrun hotbed with events at Bramhall Park (near Stockport), Heaton Park (Manchester), Alexandra Park (Oldham), Platt Fields Park (Manchester) and Woodbank Park (Stockport). parkrun is free but runners must register in advance on the parkrun website.
Plans for a Liverpool parkrun have been hampered by issues over venue. Originally organisers had hoped to use Sefton Park, a popular local running location, however recently nearby Princes Park has been mooted as an alternative.
