English Classic Open For Entries
4 MAR2011

March sees the hosting of an English classic race in every sense of the words. The Orion 15 is a multi-terrain test around Epping Forest which has a history stretching back almost 90 years. The first recorded run over the course was in 1923 when a hardy group of runners took a 'constitutional run of about 15 miles', according to host club Orion Harrier's club gazette.
The first official race was in 1954 and it has ran every year since, apart from 2001, when the event was a victim of the foot and mouth outbreak. It is a one lap course through the undulating Epping Forest and will take place on Saturday, March 19. Entries close on Tuesday, March 15.
The course has evolved with the growth of car traffic, it travels over and under the M25, follows horse tracks, farm tracks, metal bridges, footpaths, tunnels and many muddy stretches. It is the ultimate multi-terrain event.
There is no set entry fee, but all entrants are asked to donate a fee to cover the organisation of the race. It is an event not for beginners, but for runners of a reasonable standard.
There is a cut-off point at 90 minutes into the event and those who have not reached 9 miles at that point will be asked to retire and will be transported back to the finish. There are no medals or t-shirts, but finishers at the 2010 edition were rewarded with a flute of champagne at the finish. For more information, see www.orionharriers.org.uk
