Steve Launches Sunderland 10K

12 MAR2011

Steve Cram runs with students from the University of Sunderland

Running legend Steve Cram is the big name behind the new Sunderland City 10K. The man they called the Jarrow Arrow launched the event yesterday saying: "The opportunity to help create a new running event in Sunderland is one I couldn't resist. We've managed to design a 10k course that really will showcase the city at its best, but that's just the start of our plans."

Sponsored by online travel booking company redspottedhanky, the Sunderland City 10k will start and finish at Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light, and will take in many of the city's major landmarks. The run will make its debut on Sunday, June 26 and is being organised by DS Media and Events, a company set up in 2010 by Cram and Dave Roberts.

The event is a partnership between the Cram team and Sunderland City Council and will attract thousands of runners from the North-East as well as other parts of the north of England. Cram and Sunderland City Council have ambitious plans for running in the city. Next year, the Sunderland City 10k will be joined by a city marathon, plans for which are well underway.

As well as giving thousands of people the opportunity to join together in a new event, the Sunderland City 10k run will also be aiming to raise money for local charities. A key charity partner for the event will be the SAFC Foundation, which uses the power of sport to transform the lives of thousands of young people every year.

You can sign up by logging onto the event website or by calling 0191 525 5747.

But why does it have to be so expensive? Anyone else notices prices creeping up massively for the bigger north east races this year? £46 for the GNR, £20+ for Blaydon, £20 plus for this.
The London Marathon only costs £28 for goodness sake.

I agree - its incredibly expensive - reckon you'd attract a lot more people if the run was more competively priced. Rome marathon last weekend was only £30!!
