Ladies Day In Liverpool

9 MAY2011

runners in the Womens Liverpool 10K

A big field of women runners - there were 1,300 entrants - descended on Sefton Park in Liverpool yesterday (Sunday) to put their best foot forward. Runners of all abilities, from serious athletes to charity fundraisers, completed the ever-popular Liverpool Women's 10K, which has taken place in the city since 1986. A big crowd of supporters was out in force to watch the annual event, organised by Run Liverpool, as participants made their way around the 6.2 mile course.

The race itself was dominated by Liverpool Harriers who filled the podium positions with Maria Barrett first home in 37:19, followed by Sophie Whiteside (38:53) and Jennifer Pybis (39:32). Carol Kenny was the midpoint runner in 1:00:30 and the last finisher came in at 1:47:17.

There was also a chance for less experienced runners to take part thanks to a newly introduced 5k route as well as a 1k activity for those taking part with younger members of the family. Hannah Whiteside was fastest 5K runner in 20:41.

Event organiser Alan Rothwell, who is organising the forthcoming RunLiverpool Marathon this October, said: "The support that our participants give the local community is fantastic and every year, their fundraising efforts continue to get bigger and better. This year was no exception and from the minute we announced the race, we immediately had a vast amount of enquiries from runners to see how they could do their bit.

"In fact, whenever we plan a race, whether it is a marathon or 10k such as this, Liverpool always excels itself when it comes to community spirit and it's great to see everyone joining forces and doing their bit for the city."

Entrants as young as 16 and up to the age of 80 were sponsored by family and friends to raise essential funds for a number of the city's charities, including the 10k's official chosen charities, children's hospice Claire House and Liverpool Sunflowers.
