Record Breaking Newcastle Race For Life

8 JUL2011

Newcastle is set to host the biggest ever Race for Life held in the North East with 7,000 women already having entered to walk, jog or run 5k at Exhibition Park and Town Moor on Sunday (July 10). The event starts at 9.30 am.

Race for Life is the UK's largest women-only fundraising event series where all the money raised goes to fund Cancer Research UK's life-saving work. Women of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities join together to walk, jog or run 5k to raise money to help beat cancer. All women are welcome, regardless of whether they are taking part on their own or as part of a group.

Holly Howey, Cancer Research UK's Race for Life event manager in Newcastle, said: "Race for Life in Newcastle is a unique celebration of sisterhood and pride. The atmosphere is amazing, with local women from all walks of life coming together to make a positive difference to people affected by cancer. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.

Holly Howey added: "By entering Race for Life, and helping to fund Cancer Research UK's crucial work, people in Newcastle could make a big difference to cancer patients here on their doorstep. One-in-three people in the UK will be diagnosed with the disease at some stage in their lives. But the good news is that more people are beating it than ever before. Cancer Research UK's work is at the heart of that progress. By helping to raise money through Race for Life, our supporters are turning hope into reality."

Women can boost their contribution to Cancer Research UK's work by doing a 'wardrobe work-out' before their event. The charity is encouraging them to sort out and bag up clothes, books and accessories they no longer use and take them to the Donation Station at Race for Life. Each bag could help raise as much as an extra £30 for life-saving research. Every contribution helps and women travelling to Race for Life by public transport could still bring a book or scarf or an old handbag filled with accessories to help Cancer Research UK stock their local store.

Race for Life helps Cancer Research UK to support the work of scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to beating cancer by understanding its causes and investigating how best to prevent, diagnose and treat it.

Women in the North East can enter Tesco and Cancer Research UK's Race for Life at the event website or by calling 0871 641 1111.
