Marathon Back On Merseyside
7 OCT2011

With almost 20 years since it held such an event, Merseyside is bracing itself for the first ever RunLiverpool Marathon. Drastically reinvented since the old Mersey Marathon in 1992, organisers of the RunLiverpool Marathon are confident that the event, which is expected to attract around 12,000 participants, will do justice to the city's iconic landmarks.
Beginning in Birkenhead Park, runners will get the best view of the Liverpool skyline as they pass along the riverfront promenade between New Brighton and Wallasey, before disappearing into the Mersey Tunnel. Heading south, runners will pass by the historic Albert Dock, moving on to the Anglican Cathedral, and finishing with a stunning passage beside the waterfront.

Alan Rothwell, Race Director of the new event, took part in the old race in 1982 and recalls a difficult, wet and windy day, commenting: "I think it was my second marathon and I had the bug for sure. What I didn't account for was my lack of experience at the distance. I set off too fast and found I didn't have much left at just 18 miles!"
For more information regarding both events, you can visit the RunLiverpool Marathon website. As always, there will be a full post-race breakdown at northernrunningguide.com's results section.
