The popular Lakeland Trails Series holds its penultimate event of the year with three challenging runs in Helvellyn this weekend. Taking place tomorrow, November 5, the trio of races is expected to attract a strong crowd of participants to the Lake District.
Festivities begin early afternoon with the Helvellyn Challenge, a 15km event ideal for less competitive runners and fitness walkers. This is followed by a more competitive 15km trail race that includes graded climbs and descents for those used to off-road running. The day will be rounded off with a shorter 10k trail run that contains less challenging climbs. On the Sunday, the series will reach its conclusion with two trail races in nearby Ullswater.
All three Saturday races start and finish from Jenkins Field at Helvellyn. Prizes will be awarded for the top three men and women in each trail race, with spot prizes allocated throughout the day. A post-race party has been organised at the Ullswater Steam, which begins on Saturday evening at 7pm.
Since its inception in 2004, when 80 competitors participated in the first event, the Lakeland Trail series has enjoyed considerable popularity. Located at various places across the Lake District, last year's series drew in over 5000 trail runners.
