parkrun Fireworks
6 NOV2011
There were parkrun fireworks across the north of England yesterday with the successful launch of a new event in East Yorkshire, a record turnouts at Newcastle and Sheffield Hallam and a special parkrun tribute to the late Jimmy Saville at Leeds.
31 runners lined up for the first Sewerby parkrun at Sewerby Hall and Gardens with the vast majority parkrun virgins. Barnsley Harrier John Broom running at his 21st parkrun location finished first in 17:35 while first timer Charlotte Edge (Scarborough AC) was fastest lady in 21:14.
John Broom's teammate Steve Darby ran round in 19:01 to claim fourth place; notably Sewerby was Steve's 55th different parkrun venue. David Bower was the midpoint runner in 24:41 and the field closed on 34:09.
Newcastle (295) and Sheffield Hallam (289) drew record attendances and doubtless both are looking forward to breaking through the 300 barrier.
Possibly the most colourful of the UK's 80-odd parkrun events taking place yesterday was at Roundhay Park, Leeds where runners paid tribute to Yorkshire legend, the late Jimmy Saville. In keeping with parkrun's reputation for fun and enthusiasm - qualities Jimmy had in spades - dozens of runners turned up with Saville-style wigs, tracksuits, bling and cigars. Check out some great photos at the Roundhay parkrun Facebook page.
