Girl Power At Durham

16 NOV2011

Rosie Smith

History was made at Durham Parkrun on Saturday (November, 12), as Rosie Smith became the first ever female to record overall victory at the northeast venue. The runner, from Durham City Harriers AC, completed the 5k event in a highly impressive time of 17:19.

Rosie headed a field of 183 competitors for the popular parkrun, 43 taking part for the first time. The Durham City Harriers Runner finished more than 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Patrick Allen Duffy (17:42), while the second placed female, Treena Johnson, came in at 20:38.

Perhaps even more impressive is the fact the run didn't even represent a PB for Rosie, 26, who registered a sub 17-minute 5k (16:57) at the Edinburgh Self-Transcendence event in 2008. Her performance comes not long after Justina Heslop set a new female record at parkrun with a 15:58 at Bushy, becoming the first female to finish within the 16-minute bracket.

Parkrun is a weekly, 5k timed event held on Saturday mornings. You can sign-up to your nearest parkrun at their website.
