After enjoying considerable success in its inaugural event, the RunLiverpool Marathon organisers have opened registration for the 2012 race. Scheduled for Sunday, October 14, the race will look to build on the impressive 8,500 entries it received this year.
The course has undergone drastic change since its reinvention from the Mersey Marathon, last held in 1992. Beginning in Birkenhead Park, runners are afforded the best view of the Liverpool skyline as they pass along the riverfront promenade before disappearing into the Mersey Tunnel. Heading south, the course passes by the historic Albert Dock and finishes with a stunning passage beside the waterfront.
Competitors for this year's event received strong support from the outset with large cheering crowds present throughout the route. John McCole of Liverpool Harriers won the race in 2:34:41, while Alison Sedman of Belle Vue Racers recorded victory in the female field.
For 2012, organisers have expanded festivities by adding a two-day expo and registration in the heart of Merseyside, giving more of a 'big city' marathon atmosphere leading up to the event.
If you want to register for the race or would like further information, visit the RunLiverpool website. Cost of entries are £44 for affiliated members and £46 for non-affiliated.
