Saltwell 10k Celebrates Centenary

16 DEC2011

Saltwell 10k

The oldest road race in the UK, the Saltwell 10k, will celebrate its 100th year this Sunday, December 18. Formed in 1911 and held annually - excluding the war years - in Gateshead, the race has unsurprisingly reached its entry capacity for the centenary celebrations.

Organised by Saltwell Harriers, the undulating, traffic-free route begins at the south end of East Park Road and finishes in Saltwell Park. This year's top athletes will share prizes to the tune of £680, with the 1st male and female runners receiving £100 each.

The event gained considerable notoriety throughout the late 80s and 90s with Olympic silver medallist Mike McLeod winning the race for 17 years in succession. Mike's son, Ryan, is the current course record holder with a time of 31:08.

Look out for the outcome of the Saltwell 10k at our results page.
