Get Started In The North-East

5 JAN2012

Wannabe runners in the north-east of England have a number of opportunities to get started over the next few weeks. Sunderland parkrun is offering a special beginner-focused event on January 14. Special attention is paid to first timers on these days, easing anyone who is interested into their first ever parkrun.

At the January 14 Sunderland parkrun, a number of volunteers will take beginners around the three-lap course at different speeds. One of the pacers will be a walk/run pacer who will aim to complete the 5k in 45 minutes. This pacer will alternate between walking and jogging ensuring everyone feels comfortable. New runners wanting to go at a faster pace will also be accommodated.

Organisers are hoping that regular Sunderland parkrunners will invite a colleague, friend, husband, wife, or granny to join in the regular Saturday morning fun at Silksworth Sports Complex.

Although they have no special plans of their own, the other north-east parkruns - Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Durham - also provide a great opportunity for a gentle introduction to running in an event. parkrun events are free, timed 5k runs - start time 9.00am. Check out the parkrun website for more details of events across the north of England.

Another great way to get started running is by joining a local RunEngland group where you will find a relaxed, supportive environment ideal for beginners. Rachel Braithwaite, leader at the RunEngland group based at Durham University (Tuesday evenings 6.30pm-7.30pm - Stockton Campus, meet in the gym building) told northernrunningguide.com: "We cater for beginner and Intermediate level but no matter your standard, you'll get a friendly welcome at the group and the encouragement to progress at your own pace."

Newcastle parkrun offers pacing on the second Saturday of the month. Pacing is usually 20/25/30/35 minutes, although other requests are welcomed with open arms. There is also a tail runner every week, so those at the back of the field will never be alone.

All the best to those getting out running, whatever your pace! :)

Open to all from beginners to experience runners, not exclusive, parkruns are GREAT!
