Brownlee One-Two At Wakefield

12 JAN2012

Alistair and Jonny Brownlie in cross country action

The Brownlee brothers started 2012 in a fashion they will hope to continue in Olympic year filling the first two places at the Yorkshire Cross-Country Championships on Saturday (January 7). Older brother Alistair finished in 34:51, a few seconds ahead of Jonny at a windswept Thornes Park in Wakefield.

It was the eighth time the 23-year-old Olympic triathlon gold medal favourite has taken the county cross-country title at various age groups back to under-13 level.

Bingley's Brownlee brothers produced a model display of cross-country running dominating from the start in bright but very blustery conditions. The talented Jorge Thomas, representing Keighley and Craven AC, was third, a minute behind the international triathlon champions.

In the combined junior/senior womens event, first across the line after an impressive run was Spenborough AC junior Jennifer Walsh, followed by seniors Emma Clayton and Victoria Wilkinson, like the Brownlees representing the famous Yorkshire club Bingley Harriers.
