Events of the North, organiser of the Siglion Sunderland City 10K and Half Marathon, has announced that it will once again offer a generous payback scheme for next month’s races. The latest incentive will reward clubs who provide volunteers to help at the half marathon and 10k, both of which will take place on Sunday 7 May.
The payback scheme was launched in 2016 and offered a cash incentive to clubs when enough members signed up to run in one of the two events – 14 local clubs benefited from their participation last year. By expanding the scheme to include rewards for volunteering, clubs could earn up to £250 at the upcoming races.
The expansion of the benefit scheme signals further development in what is both an innovative way of rewarding participation in the event and encouraging grass roots involvement, as event founder Steve Cram details: “We launched the club payback scheme at last year’s Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K and it was really well received.”
Steve adds: “We paid out over £1,000 to 14 grass roots clubs around the region and the initiative proved to be a great way to thank them for their support of the event. As well as providing loads of runners, the North East’s athletics clubs have a fantastic tradition of volunteering, and this extension to the payback scheme recognises and rewards that.”
Organised by Events of the North in partnership with Sunderland City Council and Active Sunderland, the event has become firmly established in the North East calendar since its first staging in 2011. Last year saw almost 4,000 runners compete at the event’s new home at Keel Square, a symbol of the city’s regeneration.
Entries for both the Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K are still open – registration details are available here.
