The Brass Monkey Half Marathon once again attached a huge field of runners with 1550 runners taking to the course on Sunday 24th January, 2010. York Knavesmire Harriers once again held a well marshalled and organised event with the weather also providing good conditions for the race.
2010 saw a record number of over 1500 finishers and a superb effort by reigning Brass Monkey champion Matthew Pierson of Holmfirth Harriers to claim victory in a new course record of 1h 05m 35s, taking 34 seconds of the old record held by Ian Fisher of Otley AC since 2006. Phil Coulson (Chester Le Street) came home second in 72.36minutes, very closely followed by Phil Taylor (Bridlington Road Runners) only 4 seconds behind. First Female and first York runner home was Becky Penty (1h:18:37s) of York Acorn, who was over a minute ahead of Josie Hodgetts (Otley AC) in second and Melissa Neal (March AC) third. All of the 1550 runners finished within 3 hours of the starting gun. Full race results can be viewed on the official website.
Many runners commented on the great organisation of the event "Could you please pass on my thanks to all your members/volunteers who made today such as great success. This was my second Brass Monkey and this year I was even more impressed by the outstanding organisation. Of particular note were the fantastic people doing the luggage numbers and the encouraging words from marshalls all the way round the course. I'm sure everyone who took part appreciates all the hard work you and your team put in to organising the event"
If you fancy running this event in 2011, make sure you get your entries in early when the race entry opens later this year as it is sure to reach its race entry limit in quick time as it does every year. Keep an eye on the York Knavesmire Harriers website for more information on next year's race.
