Podium regular Helen Sahgal provided some much needed colour on a drab North West morning as she dominated the women's race at the Alder Hey 10K. The Mersey Tri athlete - bright club vest, flowing crimson locks and salmon-coloured compression socks - clocked 40:03 for first place ahead of Jacqui Khoueiry (41:55) and Alexandra Kokkinaki (43:29).
Helen shared the limelight with special guest starter, 5-year-old Alder Hey patient Poppy-Mae. Poppy-Mae, a fundraiser for the charity and a face of the #BeASuperStar2018, was joined by her family to wish the runner’s good luck as the 10k starter horn sounded and was later on hand with the finish tape for the first male (Gareth Raven - 33:44) and female (Helen) finishers.
The second edition of the Alder Hey Children’s Charity 10k & Family Fun Run on Sunday saw over 1000 runners and spectators congregate at scenic Croxteth Hall & Country Park. Starting and finishing besides the historic hall, the participants in both the 10k and fun run managed to raise a smile as they pushed hard in the rain.
The Bananas in Pyjamas were crowd favouriters in their blue and white stripped costumes and bright yellow faces. They were among hundreds raising money for one of the UK’s most important children’s charities, Alder Hey.
