Sunderland Harrier Michelle Avery put three consecutive second place finishes behind her to place first in Sunday's Gibside Fruit Bowl trail race. The event, organised by Consett's Blackhill Bounders, is known for its challenging course at Rowlands Gill, with runners tackling a 6 mile (and a bit) trail in the magnificent setting of the Gibside estate.
A firm favourite in the north east calendar, Sunday's race attracted over 400 participants in what was its 17th staging. Michelle Avery clocked 47:34 to finish top in the female field - 38th overall - beating Sarah Lister (47:51) of host club Blackhill Bounders.
Jarrow & Hepburn's Brendan McMillan secured first place in the men's competition with a time of 40:21, closely followed by Philip Sanderson (41:26) and Michael Hedley (42:07). Full results of the race are available at northernrunningguide.com.
