Ballot Entries Open At Great North

Great North Run 2012

Organisers of the Bupa Great North Run have put prospective competitors on red-alert with news that the ballot for this year's race is now open. Scheduled for Sunday 15 September, Britain's most popular running event looks likely to attract 55,000 participants.

Last year's race drew in a record number of entries with 108,000 applications, more than half of which were successful. Every postcode region in the country was represented on the start line and an estimated £30 million was raised for hundreds of charities.

The 2012 Bupa Great North Run was the first major mass participation event following the success of London 2012 and the Paralympics. Gold medallists Greg Rutherford, Mo Farah, Ellie Simmonds, Kat Copeland and Nicola Adams acted as honorary starters to set the runners on their half marathon journey as the Red Arrows display team flew overhead.

To register for the ballot, visit the Great North Run website. Applications close at noon on February 4, with applicants being advised later that week.
