With the New Year now well and truly upon us, the racing season has already shifted into gear. As such, next month’s Brooks Alsager 5, regarded as one of the fastest 5 mile races on the circuit, is seen as a prime opportunity for runners to kick-start the new season.
Scheduled for Sunday 7 February, the Alsager 5 begins at the Alsager Leisure Centre in Crewe. The race regularly attracts upwards of 1000 runners. As of last month, more than 600 competitors had signed up.
Last year’s race saw Preston Harriers’ Helen Clitheroe successfully defend her title with victory in 27:14 (slightly slower than her 2014 performance), with Swansea Harriers’ Karyl Jones taking second in 27:50 and Kate Hold third (28:06). Clitheroe has committed to taking part in next month’s event.
In the men’s competition, Cardiff AC’s Ieuan Thomas took victory in 24:03, closely followed by Mark Draper (24:09) and John Beatie (24:12). Those vying for the 2016 title look likely to be Chris Parr, who ran a 29:45 at the 2015 Telford 10K, and former champion Ben Fish.
Entries for the race are still being taken; registration details are available here.
