One of the most popular series of running events in the UK starts its 2014 programme today (Saturday 19 July) at Maidstone. Big Fun Run has expanded to 17 dates at locations from Glasgow to Ipswich, Newcastle to Southampton. And the secret of their success?
Big Fun Run director, Neil Kilgour says: “The Big Fun Run is strictly for fun. It doesn’t matter how quickly or slowly you go. You can run, jog, juggle, dress up, take a buggy. There’s no pressure as the events are untimed, just some easy moves and a lot of laughs. It’s all about taking part and enjoying the day. If you’d love to get more active in 2014 then this is a great place to start.
Neil continued: “This isn’t about testosterone-charged athletes racing home in a record time. It’s about mums with prams, dads with toddlers on their shoulders. Are you getting a picture of something a little different?”
Big Fun Run is hugely popular with charity runners. Fundraiser Nicky Omidi will be leading a team of 13 adults and 13 children - Sebastian's Soldiers, pictured - from Surrey, at the Southampton event on Sunday 27 July. She is raising money for the British Heart Foundation in memory of her son Sebastian. Nicky, her family and friends have already raised close to £4,000.
