The Birchwood 10K celebrated its 30th staging in style with almost 800 runners competing in Sunday's event in Warrington. The race, organised by Spectrum Striders RC, was won for the second year in succession by Tarus Elly, with Louise Gardner top in the female field.
With three small inclines over the 10k route, the route is fast and relatively flat. Starting close to Birchwood railway station, runners moved through the rural lanes of Croft before finishing at Birchwood Boulevard.
Salford Harriers' Elly, fresh from winning the Meerbrook 15K last month, secured another victory with a time of 31:05. Elly was closely followed by Tipton Harriers' Michael Aspinall (31:12), with Paul Lockwood (32:04) taking third place.
In the women's competition, Gardner (35:26) finished three minutes ahead of Katherine Fitzpatrick (38:26), with Louise Blizzard (38:39) rounding off the top trio of female runners. The mid-point competitor was Daniel Issawi in 51:04, with the last runner home in 1:23:56.
