Birthday Bash Planned For Sedgefield Harriers

Sedgefield HarriersSedgefield Harriers will commemorate their 10th year by hosting the 2015 North East Cross Country Championships.  The announcement was made following this year’s event in Newcastle, which took place last weekend and saw over 1,000 senior and junior runners compete on the Town Moor.

Since being formed in 2005, Sedgefield Harriers have established themselves as one of the North East’s most active clubs, with over 120 adult members and a junior section of around 250. Accolades since then have included England Athletics Development Club of the Year and UK Athletics Club of the Year in 2011, and County Durham Club of the Year 2014.

Sedgefield Harriers is planning a series of events to mark the club’s 10th birthday and will use the landmark to raise awareness and funds for its campaign to build track and field events facilities in the town. Last year, planning permission for the track was granted by Durham County Council and the club began the work of raising around £500,000 to complete the project.

Hosting the North East Cross Country Championships will be a massive boost for the club, with the event regarded as central to the region’s sporting calendar. Over the decades, the championships have been a proving ground for some of the region’s most successful athletes, including Brendan Foster, Mike McLeod, Steve Cram and, most recently, Laura Weightman.

Ean Parsons, chair of Sedgefield Harriers, comments: “This is a really significant moment for Sedgefield Harriers.  We started as a group of seven who went for a run around East Park in 2005, so it is very fitting that a decade later, we’re going to be hosting the club’s biggest ever event at the same venue. “

“It has been an amazing 10 years and the development of Sedgefield Harriers has been achieved thanks to the work of many hugely committed coaches, administrators and other volunteers.  We are delighted that the NECAA has given us the opportunity to host the North East Cross Country Championships and we look forward to staging an excellent event.”
