While most of us can only dream of setting a marathon world record, the opportunity of doing so—as part of a relay team—might not be so far-fetched. This year’s World Marathon Challenge sees teams of 26-36 runners attempt to break the world marathon record.
As part of the pursuit, each team competes at their own venue where members’ take turns running 200 metre legs until the full 26.2 mile distance is completed. Younger children can take part in the World 5000m Challenge - a relay event in which teams are challenged to beat the 5000m world record.
The results are collated at the race website with the grand finale set for Wednesday 7 October 2015 but teams can compete and enter their time up to two weeks beforehand. The events, supported by England Athletics, Eveque and the AAA, are easy and free to organise.
To take part, members must choose a date to suit their school or join teams from 40 countries around the world for the simultaneous grand finale in October. The World Marathon Challenge is supported by British Athletics and qualifies entrants for the British Athletics Endurance Team Awards.
