Preston Harriers’ Helen Clitheroe successfully defended her title at Sunday’s Brooks Alsager 5. The race, which begins at the Alsager Leisure Centre in Crewe, is regarded as one of the fastest 5 mile races on the circuit, and is often seen as the ideal event for runners to kick-start the new season.
And so it proved for GB international Clitheroe, 41, who was making her first competitive outing in 2015. Clitheroe finished in 27:14 (slightly slower than last year’s performance), with Swansea Harriers’ Karyl Jones taking second in 27:50 and Kate Hold third (28:06).
Despite not hitting a PB at the course, Clitheoroe seemed happy with her performance, tweeting: ‘Glad to get back racing today in the #Alsager5 not crazy fast but a nice win #imstill here.’
Almost 900 runners turned out for the Brooks event, which saw Cardiff AC’s Ieuan Thomas take overall victory in a time of 24:03, closely followed by Mark Draper (24:09) and John Beatie (24:12). Welsh champion Thomas paid tribute to the two runners-up: ‘Very happy to take the win today at my debut Alsager 5! Big thanks to John and Mark for making the race.’
Of the 896 who finished the 5 mile event, Claire Harrison was the mid-point runner in 38:31, with the final competitor home in 1:12:07. Full results are available here.
