The Brooks Alsager 5 once again lived up to its reputation as being one of the fastest events on the circuit with a series of impressive times posted on Sunday (7 February). Morpeth Harriers’ Johnny Taylor secured his first victory of 2016 with a time of 24:10, while Stockport’s Elle Vernon led the female field home.
Since replacing the Cheadle Spring 6 in 2000, the 5 mile race has become a late winter favourite. Moving from the Alsager Leisure Centre in Crewe, the race was close to capacity with 920 of 1000 entrants taking part.
Morpeth’s Taylor set a quick early pace and finished 12 seconds ahead of Stockport’s Patrick Martin (24:22), with Frank Baddick in third (24:34). Taylor’s clubmate Ian Hudspith took fifth in 24:49.
In the women’s competition, Elle Vernon followed up her impressive showing at Edinburgh’s Cross Country Championships with first place in 27:17, followed by Laura Whittle (27:25) and Rebecca Robinson (27:41). Midpoint in the field was Graham Howse in 39:38, while the field closed on 1:14:22.
