While most of the running world will be focused on the world’s largest half marathon this Sunday (and whether Farah can inscribe his name further into the history books) there are a number of races this weekend that merit the attention of the runABC North news desk.
One of the most exciting looks likely to be the UKFast City of Salford 10K. A field of up to 3,000 is expected to run a course that moves from the MediaCityUK Piazza and follows a route around Salford Quays and Trafford Park before crossing the bridge back into MediaCityUK to the finish line.
The route has been a big draw for the Sports Tours International’s event, which now stands as one of the North West’s premier road races. Expect some top times too, with club runners across the country identifying this as a prime chance for an autumn PB.
In Merseyside, BTR Liverpool will host one of the most popular events in their portfolio, the Wirral Half Marathon and 10K. Both races have a fantastic start point at Coastal Drive, with runners moving out along the waterfront as far as the Seacombe Ferry Terminal.
For 2018, the BTR team has also introduced a further incentive for runners to hit their peak with an additional PB medal on offer for anyone who manages to improve upon their previous time at either race.
Sunday will also see the latest staging of the Run Wigan 10K and accompanying Family Mile event. Last year’s race drew in a 3000 strong field despite some torrential rain, and, with the forecast looking dry for this weekend, organisers Joining Jack can surely look forward to building on this number.
In Leeds, over 1700 runners will compete in the fifth staging of the Vale of York Half Marathon. Sunday’s field will be the first to experience a revamped route, which starts at a real (but not real live) runway and moves through the scenic closed roads south of York.
Other races this Sunday include the Ribble Way Run Trail events, the Yorkshire Off Road Marathon and Montane Trail 10 Delamere.
