Celebrity Duo Show Newcastle Can

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Ross Noble

Celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and comedian Ross Noble have both confirmed they will be competing in the upcoming Simplyhealth Great North 5K as part of the Newcastle Can initiative, a project that is aiming to get the city fitter and healthier.

Launched earlier this year and spearheaded by Fearnley-Whittingstall, the project is looking to get people within the Newcastle community to make changes to their diet, become more involved in physical activities and, as a collective aim for the city, to lose 100,000 lbs in weight.

The duo will be part of the ‘Newcastle Can' wave on race day (Saturday 9 September), with runners given their own start at the event. Anyone looking to join the wave can do so when registering online for the 5k.

Looking ahead to the ambitious plan, Hugh commented: “Newcastle is leading the way. I’m hoping that towns and cities across Britain will take up the challenge to eat better and get healthier.

"Events like the Simplyhealth Great North 5K are a fantastic way to become more active – not least because there’s so much support from other runners, and spectators. I’m a novice myself so I’m looking forward to the run with a certain amount of trepidation!”

The 5k will see runners start on the Newcastle side of the River Tyne and follow a scenic route over two of the Quayside’s seven bridges, the Swing Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Registration is available here
