Club Challenge Reaches Great Yorkshire Run

Great Yorkshire Run

Teams entering this weekend's Bupa Great Yorkshire Run will be given the opportunity to compete in the Great Ethiopian Run. Nova International, organisers of the Great Run events, have made arrangements for the successful club to make an all-expenses five day trip to participate in Africa's biggest race.

The top placed running club at Sunday's event will be placed in a draw with the other qualifying clubs from the Great Run events this year. The winners of each race, based on the average time of their fastest seven men and women to finish, will be placed in a draw after the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth next month.

David Newton, Nova International's Managing Director said: "The Great Run Club Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for British athletes to visit a country with a mythical history whilst also competing in one of the world's greatest road running events. The popularity and love of the Great Ethiopian Run means it attracts not only a massive field but over a million spectators each year. I'm sure the Brits who make the trip will never forget the experience."

The successful club will see their top fourteen contestants win an all-expenses five day trip at the Ya Ya Resort hotel complex just outside Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. They will also have a personal meeting with Haile Gebrselassie. Competing clubs at each event will have the opportunity of clinching other awards: First team - £500 and 15 free entries to the following year's event. Second and third sides will also receive ten and five entries for the respective 2014 races.

Nova International may be offering the Ethiopian prize to the team that wins a team prize race in the Great Run series and then is drawn from the hat containing the team winners from other races in the series. This may be one way to encourage more club runners to participate. How much notice was given and to whom? Are readers aware that the Great Run series no longer award vets prizes in any age category? They were dropped without notice or consultation at the beginning of 2012. Even the smallest races try to award small prizes for MV40 and V60 and F Vets. Great Run meanness should cost them runners.
