Daniel Cliffe and Amelia Pettitt did more than burn off Christmas Day calories at the inaugural Northwich Boxing Day 5K (Thursday 26 December). They went around the fast, traffic-free course in a flash to claim first places.
A new offering from Run Cheshire & Gogledd Cymru, this sold-out race was held on Boxing Day as an antidote to the festive excesses and open to all runners irrespective of their abilities. The 5K started at 9.30am from Marbury Lane.
Around 200 participants, beginners as well as experienced athletes tested their legs and stamina in Neumann’s Flashes – a series of lime beds within the Northwich Woodlands. These protected areas are home to various species of plants and birds and flat so perfect for a post-Christmas PB.
Some rapid running by Daniel Cliffe of Liverpool Harriers & AC saw him win this new Boxing Day 5K in 15:44. Harry Dexter of Vale Royal AC was second in 16:12 closely followed by Daniel Pettitt of Kent AC in 16:16.
There was an equally speedy session by Amelia Pettitt of Vale Royal AC who was the winning female in 17:30. Her teammate Holly Weedall was second in 17:40 with Keira Brady-Jones of Wirral AC third in 18:23.
There were cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female and age category winners: Christmas-themed medal and seasonal goodies for every finisher.
Race director Mike Harrington was delighted by the event’s debut and plans to return to this attractive venue with a series of evening races in summer 2020. These will be graded according to ability.
