Those considering taking part in next year’s Greater Manchester Marathon are being alerted to the fact that early bird entry for the race closes on Monday (1 June). The race, recently awarded the ‘UK’s Best Marathon’ for the second year in a row, will take place in April 2016, with a definitive date set to be announced next month.
Last month’s event saw Dr Ron Hill and Mara Yamauchi set the field on their way and witnessed a record number of finishers completing the course. Run Fast’s Paul Martelletti took first place in 2:17:46, nearly one minute ahead of runner-up Eoin Callaghan, with Michael Kallenberg securing third place in a time of 2:19:00. Each of the top four men dipped under 2:20.
In what was her debut marathon event, Georgie Bruinvels gave an outstanding performance to claim the woman’s title. Bruinvels, who had a half marathon PB of 1:14:27, set a winning time of 2:37:21, more than a minute quicker than the previous course record - held by club mate Emily Wicks. Belgrave Harriers’ Samantha Amend improved upon her third place position last year to take second in 2:44:21, with St. Helens’ Gemma Connolly third in 2:47:18.
