Warrington once again welcomed its annual half marathon with open arms as a total of over 3,000 runners competed in Sunday’s (18 September) event. The race, which also incorporated a 10k and WireFM Family Mile, took in all of the landmarks of a sun-soaked Warrington and concluded with a spectacular finish through the iconic Golden Gates.
Recording a second successive sell-out in what was its eighth year, the half marathon saw Liverpool Harriers’ Dejene Gezimu improve upon his second place showing in 2015 with victory in 1:07:42 – a new course record to boot. Gezimu has enjoyed a remarkable September with wins at the Wigan and Wirral 10K over the past three weeks. Stuart Robinson (1:08:39) and James Kevan (1:09:55) were second and third respectively.
Victoria Atess of Manchester Front runners took first for the ladies in an impressive run of 1:29:04, with Emma Fiedler (1:30:30) and Louise Blizzard following (1:30:48). runABC’s Alex Osborne competed in the race for the first time (while also managing to fit in the Wire FM Mile) and was full of praise: “EHM was an amazing day out. Warrington really outshone itself with this event.”
“The HM route was fantastic and there was a great atmosphere pre and post race for runners of all ages. Loads of families all round the course out cheering runners on, handing out jelly babies and other sweets. A stunning medal, already on the calendar for a return trip back from Scotland next year, with a few friends in tow.”
The 10k, meanwhile, also saw a new course record with Przemyslaw Tomczak taking top spot in an impressive time of 33:54. In another podium finish for Manchester Frontrunners, Jane Fletcher won the female race in 39:31.
Race director Rob Griffiths said the success of both races has been due to the support of Warrington: “It’s been a fantastic day. Once again we’re receiving great feedback about the event. This is entirely due to the support of the local running community, local partners in the town, volunteers and the commitment from our team to really deliver something memorable for everyone.”
