Entries for the 2017 edition of the Run Sunderland Festival, which includes the Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K, are now open. Those considering competing in either event will receive a discount if they register before 30 November.
Organised by Events of the North in partnership with Sunderland City Council and Sunderland Live, the Run Sunderland Festival, scheduled for Sunday 7 May, has become firmly established in the North East calendar since its first staging in 2011. This year saw almost 4,000 runners compete at the event’s new home at Keel Square, a symbol of the city’s regeneration.
Some of the top runners in the north were present, with Morpeth Harriers’ Jonny Taylor leading the 10k field home in 29:56, followed by Wondiye Fikre (31:08). In the women’s field, Justina Heslop secured first in 35:48. Tadele Mulugeta and Michelle Nolan were top in their respective fields over the half marathon distance.
Steve Cram, whose company Events of the North, is organising the events, comments: “The 2016 events were really successful in bringing the races into the heart of the city. Thanks to the support of Siglion and Sunderland City Council, we were able to put the spotlight on some of the transformational projects that are underway in Sunderland, and the revised routes were also better and faster for runners than in previous years.
Cram indicated that organisers are looking at modifications for next year’s race: “We still have room to grow and plan to make further improvements for 2017, so our hope is that the early bird discount will encourage people to secure their places quickly.”
