Entry Give Away For Wirral Races

Wirral Half MarathonBTR Liverpool, organisers of next weekend’s (13 September) Wirral Half Marathon and 10K, have announced they are to give away 25 places for any runners who can raise a minimum of £50 for the event’s nominated charities. Since being established in 2013, both races have established a great reputation and were awarded the Wirral Tourism Award Event of the Year title.

Places are available if the required amount is raised for Claire House, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, Cash For Kids, Jospice and Everton In The Community. Interested runners have been alerted to inform race organiser Alan Rothwell.

The half marathon takes runners along a coastal route past Seacombe Ferry, Egremont Promenade and Fort Perch Rock. The 10k runners will finish on Coastal Drive, while the half marathon runners continue along King’s Parade and the North Wirral Coastal Path to Leasowe Lighthouse, before returning to also finish on Coastal Drive.

Last year saw Salford Harriers’ Tarus Elly take advantage of a revised route to set a new course record for the half marathon of 1:08:47, with Chris McCarthy second (1:10:30) and Penny Lane Striders’ Martin Swensson in third (1:11:38). In the women’s field, Jenny Clague successfully defended her title and improved on her time of last year by almost a minute, crossing the line in 1:22:58. Louise Blizzard (1:25:17) and Sophie Hunt (1:25:30) followed.

Liverpool Harriers’ James Riley topped a competitive 10k field, coming home in 32:04, with John Heap following in 32:50. Local runner Alex O’Brien led the female field home in 37:42, with Knowsley Harriers’ Sharon Samon in second (40:23).
