After the cancellation of the 2015 event due to inclement weather, excitement is running high for the upcoming Essar Four Villages Half Marathon. The race, scheduled for Sunday 17 January, looks likely to reach its sell out capacity of 2250 with over 2000 participants already registered.
Organised by Helsby Running Club, the scenic course follows a rural countryside route, passing through the Cheshire villages of Dunham on the Hill, Mouldsworth, Manley and Helsby. With a total climb of 170m, the half marathon is regarded as undulating.
With the half marathon being called off twice in the previous three years, there was a suggestion that organisers might change the race date. After asking all of those who entered the 2015 event for feedback, over 70% of entrants said they wanted the race to remain in January.
The last half marathon (2014) saw Altrincham and District’s Mohammad Abu-Rezeq (1:05:46) take first position in an extremely tight contest with Josh Lilly; less than a second separated the two. Wilmslow’s Diane McVey secured top place in the women’s competition in 1:19:19, followed by Kelly Crickmore (1:20:34).
