Old Gold In The Algarve

Women European Masters XC ActionSun, sea, golden sand and plenty of gold medals are on offer to Great Britain’s master athletes in Monte Gordo, Portugal over the forthcoming weekend. More than 1,000 men and women over-35 years will compete in a three-day festival of running and race walking at the European Masters Non-Stadia Championships.

The 16th edition of this event returns to the Algarve for the first time since 2005. Last year’s European Championships in Grossetto, Italy saw GB finish fourth on the medals table (28) behind Italy (159), Germany (69) and Switzerland (39).

There are 98 athletes from Britain competing this year compared to 260 from Spain, 224 from Portugal, 95 from Germany and 87 from Italy and there are a total of 22 European nations represented.

Competition is held in five year age groups from 35 years upwards and the programme features 10k and half marathon races, plus a cross country relay.

Without doubt the strongest category for GB in the running events will be the women’s over-65 group. This features multiple world-record holder Angela Copson (Rugby and Northampton); prolific international medal winner Ros Tabor (Dulwich Runners) and the leading W65 GB 5k runner for 2015 and 2016, Janette Stevenson (Falkirk), with Sue James (Paddock Wood) in support.
