Expert Advice In Sheffield

Stuart Bond

Anticipation is growing in Yorkshire ahead of the the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (1-3 March) when the premiere of 'The Dragon's Back' will headline the bill. Next week (Wednesday 13 February) provides a taster for that feast of film with a 'Running Expert Night' at the festival venue, the Showroom Cinema. Last year this expert night, staged by Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, with support from innovative local retailer Accelerate, drew a capacity crowd resulting in standing room only. This year the event looks stronger than ever so early ticket booking is recommended.

The talks will be interspersed with comment from sports scientist & exercise physiologist, Adela Carter, explaining how different aspects of sports science can help the everyday athlete; and Accelerate's Stuart Hale, national level running coach and contributor to a number of running magazines, providing guidance on how to take sports science principles, and combine them with the knowledge from athletes to develop a training plan to work for you.

The speakers are:

  • Jason Ward, Great Britain international and winner of Sheffield half marathon. Jason will explain how he trains, what it took to represent GB and how this can benefit all runners
  • Stuart Bond, ranked nationally for fell running and holder of many local records. Stuart (pictured above) has recently re-structured his training following a long-term injury and will explain how changing your training pattern based on your body can lead to greater benefits.
  • Nicky Spinks, holder of the ladies record for the greatest number of Lakeland Fells climbed in 24 hours and ladies Bob Graham record holder (running over 74 miles, 42 peaks, 28,500ft of ascent in under 24 hours). Nicky will share how planning and preparation is key to her success.
  • Darryl Watton, finisher of the notorious Marathon des Sables - a 151 mile race that takes places over 6 days in the Sahara Desert. Darryl finished 35th. He will talk about training for endurance and extreme conditions.

Stuart Hale told northernrunningguide.com: "It's great that Accelerate is able to support ShAFF again this year. We hope to attract a good mix of new runners and seasoned athletes - running is one of the UK's fastest growing sports and the knowledge shared on Expert Night will help people train effectively in a way that works for them.

Stuart added: "Accelerate has a rapidly growing reputation for running expertise far beyond that of the ordinary retailer. We have drawn together a number of international-level experts from the local area to share their training and running tips with you: whether you're a first time runner, a seasoned half-marathoner or ultra-runner."

Tickets are available online at the Film Festival website. Further details are also available online at the Accelerate website.
