Fauja Singh will make a welcome return to the running scene later this year after he was confirmed as the official starter of the Big Fun Run in Victoria Park, London. Singh will start the friendly 5k run on Saturday 25 October.
Now aged 103, Singh has retired from competitive racing but still runs regularly. Since his 89th birthday, Fauja has successfully completed more than 500 races and has established iconic status amongst the running fraternity.
On starting the event, Fauja said: ”I live in the East End of London so being local makes being the starter here so much more of a proud moment. What’s great about today is that you don't need to be an experienced runner to take part. It’s lovely seeing all the charities come today raising lots of funds and awareness for good causes.”
The Big Fun Run series has now expanded to 17 separate events across the UK and is hugely popular with charity runners. More than 7,000 people took part in the nationwide events last year and more than £200,000 was raised. Entries for the the Big Fun Runs yet to take place are still open.
