This Sunday (24 September) will mark what looks certain to be the final staging of the Run Preston events. The concluding rynning of the trio of races, which includes a 10k, 5k and 2k, is likely to be an emotional occasion for the 2,000 plus expected to compete.
News of the its untimely end broke last month with organiser Steve Ashcroft citing rising costs, especially building and road works, as the reason the races would no longer be financially tenable.
Since being launched, the event has become a firm and popular fixture in the Lancashire calendar and boasts an attractive route that takes competitors from the Flag Market on a traffic free course that moves through the city centre and down into Avenham Park.
Throughout the years, it has pulled in some top runners, including a starring performance by former European athletics champion Helen Clitheroe in 2015, when the Preston Harrier took top spot in 34:59.
It looks more than likely that Sunday will throw up a number of memorable scenes to mark this last hurrah for the Run Preston events - keep an eye out for runABC North’s race report early next week.
