It was a risk-free victory for Ben Gamble who defied windy conditions to set a new course record of 1:46:44 at Sunday's South Cheshire 20. The Tipton Harrier enjoyed a good contest with Coventry Godiva's Ben Jones up until 15 miles when Gamble broke away. Jones finished in 1:52:10, a minute ahead of Stuart Spencer (Notts AC). Lucy Hodgson (2:18:06) of Newquay Road Runners was first lady with Michelle Buckle (Newcastle Staffs AC) second on 2:20:15.
The popular endurance test attracted a field of 200 plus with many using the race as a final preparation for an autumn marathon. Runners faced 20 miles of frequently hilly, mainly country lanes through Weston, Englesea-brook, Betley, Wrinehill, Shraleybrook, Audley and Barthomley.
Post-race comment was highly favourable; John Robson's remarks were typical: "Please can I thank each and every marshall and volunteer out there today for making the race a great one. I absolutely loved it and the enthusiasm from everyone put a big cheesy smile on my face (despite the wind). I'll be recommending the South Cheshire 20 to all of my running friends for sure. Thanks again everyone, you rocked it!"
South Cheshire Harrier Robert Brown was the midpoint runner in 2:48:50 and the field closed on 4:28:23.
