Get Work-Ready At Brighton Marathon

Volunteers at Brighton marathon

Organisers of Brighton marathon are taking an innovative approach to recruiting volunteers for their 2013 event on Sunday 14 April. They have teamed up with Brighton City College and Job Centre Plus (JCP) in a scheme that offers local unemployed people the chance to get involved in the marathon, develop new skills and enhance their job prospects.

Marathon race organisers have been recruiting volunteers since October for a variety of roles on the week leading up to race day, race day itself and post event. 2,000 volunteers are needed at various points along the course which starts in Preston Park and finishes on Madeira Drive. 2013 will see the fourth running of the event, and a big part of its success is due to the fantastic volunteer support it receives.

Now 40 Job Centre Plus customers will be offered a place on an accredited course in March funded by City College. Candidates will leave with either a team leader qualification or a health and safety qualification. Each course will have a Brighton marathon focus and once candidates have successfully completed their course, they will become part of the event team and work in a key role on race day.

"Jobcentre Plus, Brighton marathon and City College are very excited about working in partnership on this project," said JCP's Grahame Widdowson. "We believe that the skills and qualifications acquired will be extremely beneficial and transferable to future job roles".

Amir Bahrami at City College added: "I am extremely happy that City College can be part of this event. We are keen to recognise the time and effort these volunteers put into the event by giving them the opportunity to achieve a qualification. Gaining experience through voluntary work is a great way to enhance your job prospects. We offer a range of courses for unemployed people through our Opening Doors Programme."

Brighton marathon hopes that the newly trained volunteers will return year on year and be the start of a legacy to support the event, strengthening its delivery and community involvement. To sign up as volunteer for the 2013 Brighton marathon, visit the event website.
